<br />
I have a long name that many even in my own country - which is large and diverse - find difficult to pronounce. Both my first name and last name are lengthy and people trip over them. To me, this is a source of great humour and has given me some cherished nicknames as well. It even gave me an opportunity to write <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/todays-paper/tp-life/article29155911.ece#" target="_blank">one of the most humorous pieces </a>I've ever written - and probably the greatest number of spontaneous compliments from friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Sometimes, even from strangers who were coming to meet me for work.<br />
<br />
Many friends, especially <a href="https://kichukhonn.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Sharmila</a>, urge me to make a list lest I forget the many versions. I usually put out posts on Facebook saying 'Today, I was (latest version of my name)' and down the years, these posts have never failed to raise lots of chuckles and guffaws. I keep telling Sharmila that I never forget any of them but yesterday in an idle moment, I decided to take it seriously and make a list. It's not easy to search for past statuses on Facebook and there will be no easy way to remember these names if I do forget.<br />
<br />
One of the Zentangle groups I am part of had a live session yesterday morning on Facebook. I missed it, but Fife was one of the patterns used there. Looking at all the tiles popping up on that group, I found myself wanting to draw it. As the day progressed, however, the idea of using Zentangle to record all these variations of my name grew and possessed me. So I did a practice tile, and improved on it today.<br />
<br />
I would have liked to use many more pyrotechnics to embellish this tile, but after two days of thinking about it and improving it and attending to the fine detail, my mind and hand were tired. Maybe another day, when I collect more mispronunciations of my name, I will do another.<br />

<br />
Don't the green portions rather remind you of zucchini? Or a snake gourd or any of the several striped gourds we have across the world. We have several varieties in India. Despite that, I really like the look of this zendala I did for <a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2020/04/zendala-moments-16.html" target="_blank">Zendala Moments 16</a>.<br />
<br />
I've had a lot of green tangling these past few weeks thanks to Project Pack 09. I didn't have the lighter green Micron but I did have the dark one. Initially, I started off with Shattuck in grey, where the green is now. I tried to embellish it with shading, white charcoal, it didn't work. So I gave it a green streak with the dark green Micron. And then I kept going at it. I used two greens from the Prismacolour set and blended them. The leafy tangle in black and graphite is also an influence of PP09. It is a version - or should I say intention - of a tangle called Sampson. I bent it to the shape given here. It looks nothing like the original now but still …<br />
<br />
PS: I just found out zucchini is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zucchini" target="_blank">plural for zucchino</a>! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the last few weeks, I've been seeing a lot of these garlic cloves popping up on my Instagram feed so I decided to see how they looked in orbs. It is probably the first time I'm trying them so I wasn't very pleased with the result when I filled in the orbs in the template. I left it alone and picked it up today after more than a week. The shading made a big difference and the tile looks bright because of the white lines. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm always pleasantly surprised when a tile that started out disappointingly improves after a 'resting period' or when it has other tangles added to it. My initial instinct with such tiles is to tear them up but I persisted with this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some of the tangles I have been seeing these last few weeks, especially on the Instalive sessions held by CZTs from various countries, are in this tile. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By profession, I'm a writer-editor. I wrote <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/blink/watch/staying-in-touch-during-a-pandemic/article31243813.ece#!" target="_blank">this article</a> on how CZTs and others are hosting free live sessions to manage lockdown blues. Take a look! It's really generous of all of them to do this. As I live in India, most of these sessions are at really late hours for me, but they are a lot of fun!</div>

Of late, I've been rather taken with the tangles Chainging and Punzel. My Zentangle group on Facebook chose the former for its weekly challenge. I used them for <a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2020/02/zendala-moments-14.html" target="_blank">Zendala Moments 14.</a><br />
<a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2020/02/zendala-moments-14.html" target="_blank">https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2020/02/zendala-moments-14.html</a><br />
I did the first one on a 3Z tile and went on to doing two more after further practice on drawing them bigger.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipID3gT6MNa8CmAzKEqJhQdq_B1niNy4hJwriX7tz35xxhupw3wiVCJmm0nc37Iu5LME5YBfb__lo7_8BwY3pxdyVgjize_mBxJ2DR74rPaK8bg7II7r_STW6ujou1mzQNxap3L-8N1nTm/s1600/IMG_5384.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipID3gT6MNa8CmAzKEqJhQdq_B1niNy4hJwriX7tz35xxhupw3wiVCJmm0nc37Iu5LME5YBfb__lo7_8BwY3pxdyVgjize_mBxJ2DR74rPaK8bg7II7r_STW6ujou1mzQNxap3L-8N1nTm/s640/IMG_5384.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried various pens on this tile - the Punzel and centre motif and the auras were done with the regular Sakura Micron 01 while I used 003 and 005 for the detail inside. I could not decide how to shade the Verve tangle in the middle so I opted to shade inside the wreath. I kept at it and achieved the depth, and that's progress for me. After that, I could not decide how to enhance the tile any further and left it well alone. The colours I chose were not as great as I hoped they would be.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZtEQd1lLBTFvdP-_tyCezDSnX5YlIVfGSXd2RBLqKOxEuvS32Nb6JS0Hd5AbnyF9Nxk7dnSdDpveKOjDb0z9pkp4fO_Q_wTYzLTolNzm_ON3iAtiD7ircSyW3Wpsp4XeK9MfMTyoI-7P/s1600/IMG_5382.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZtEQd1lLBTFvdP-_tyCezDSnX5YlIVfGSXd2RBLqKOxEuvS32Nb6JS0Hd5AbnyF9Nxk7dnSdDpveKOjDb0z9pkp4fO_Q_wTYzLTolNzm_ON3iAtiD7ircSyW3Wpsp4XeK9MfMTyoI-7P/s640/IMG_5382.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I say peacock, a friend says dragon. That's how each of us interpreted the motifs at the centre, though all I was trying to do was use Chainging and Marasu. I had taken the Black and White class a while ago and not practised it much so I was happy with what I achieved on this tile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6865B5fhextzj2K8hX-hLay8zoHFTRrOwoiUEvUGlqC0F4oWwMEVnCgwagUaXYnt6P3q0zvBVedQfcD0_Qo1Do4qr5VmGr0V9psltcoUyHQKZEEd9uLq1lsHxcB2PkcUZgpKjktAGfSY5/s1600/IMG_5368.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6865B5fhextzj2K8hX-hLay8zoHFTRrOwoiUEvUGlqC0F4oWwMEVnCgwagUaXYnt6P3q0zvBVedQfcD0_Qo1Do4qr5VmGr0V9psltcoUyHQKZEEd9uLq1lsHxcB2PkcUZgpKjktAGfSY5/s640/IMG_5368.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This was the 3Z tile that I did Chainging on first. I saw a Shattuck-in-Huggins tile on Google Images (which is not showing up now that I want to credit it for the inspiration) and decided to build a Chainging border and set the Huggins inside. Shattuck is such a simple tangle but I invariably get confused. I'm pretty pleased with how this turned out, all the same.</div>

<a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Adele's</a> IAST was the first event I came across three years ago when I was looking for weekly challenges to boost my Zentangle skills. Having been an avid blogger in the pre-social media days, I was no stranger to challenges, be they related to food or photography. I had blogs for both, though the latter was short-lived. It's a year since I started this blog and I don't always succeed in posting regularly here. It just so happened that I did this tile for <a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2019/07/its-string-thing-300-featuring-ada.html" target="_blank">IAST 300</a> and I had the time to put it up in the blog. I often wonder why I cannot let blogging go despite the poor readership but then I just do it because it feels like too much trouble to think of reasons why you do something when you enjoy it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am really glad I found IAST and really appreciate Adele taking the time to comment on each tile in her round-up. This is the tile I've done for the 300th instalment of IAST. Another one of those tiles with which I've surprised myself by being bold, being dirty - literally - and not minding it at all but sending it off bravely, in the spirit of Zentangle!</div>

This tile grew out of a challenge on a Facebook Group called Zentangle India. I like how the shading turned out on the white portion, giving it body. The black patches were to mask something that did not turn out to my taste, and at one point, they looked like denim to me. I see only denim there since then. Tangle used: Florz. (I'm not sure if the thingy in the centre is a tangle.)<br />

This tile was done for <a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2019/07/its-string-thing-296-tiles.html" target="_blank">IAST 296</a>. It seemed pretty straightforward. I did not think much about it and ended up liking the result. Tangles used are Tweak and Ahh!</div>

I did this soon after a recent 'shading on black tiles' class that I took. I used a brown Sakura Micron on it out of curiosity and really liked the result. Tangles used: Tipple, Printemps and some auraing</div>

These two tiles above were also inspired by the black-and-white class I took recently. I've discovered the beauty in a sepia Micron and that's what I've used in both these tiles, along with a bit of colour and white Gelly Roll. An awkward bit was turned into a black-and-white patch. I surprised myself with these two tiles. Tangles used: Fasset, Bales and Cubine</div>

An evening of wild painting with my three-year-old niece led to this tile. I chose tangles at random, modifying the triangles over and over. I painted in swathes that were a mix of at least two colours but were primarily blue, yellow, pink and purple. Tangles used: Pokeroot, Pokeleaf, Huggins, Nekton, Tripoli</div>

Tan tile using Tweak, Jonqal, Shango, Tipple, Knightsbridge and two others I cannot recall the names of. I felt I should have used the Tranzending techique in the extreme upper left (instead of Tweak) and that would have given it the look of a wallpaper against which the others rested.</div>

<a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2019/06/its-string-thing-293.html" target="_blank">This week's challenge by Adele</a> celebrates National Doughnut Day. I was really keen to do this challenge because I like all the tangles she asked us to use and because I loved the string. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Adele mentioned memories related to doughnuts and even though I grew up in and continue to live in India, I have a few memories as well. In my teens, they weren't available in the smaller towns but they were available in rather posh bakeries in the city I went to college in and we would occasionally be gifted some by family visiting us or indulge ourselves. Now about 30 years later, everywhere we turn, there's a doughnut place or a mall that's home to a Krispy Kreme or a Dunkin' Donuts that have been washed ashore in the wave of economic liberalisation that was set off over two decades ago. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But guess what? I still prefer the fat and spongy doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar that I sank my teeth into all those years ago - sometimes they had a chocolate icing too - rather than the assembly line specimens we get now. One bite and they collapse, never mind the fancy fillings and icings and dressing-up they've got going all over and inside them. And I've never seen sprinkles on doughnuts here in my younger days.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have doughnuts native to India too, called <a href="https://www.webstagram.one/tag/gaarelu" target="_blank">gaarelu</a>. More commonly, they are savoury, but on occasion, can be made plain, without the onion and spices, and dipped in a mixture of sugar and ghee (clarified butter) - and they taste exactly like doughnuts then, even though they are made of lentils and not flour!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I know I'll cringe next week when I compare my doughnut art to the beauties submitted to Adele's event, but I thoroughly enjoyed doing this tile. </div>

<br />
I thought so long and hard over how to fill up <a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2019/05/zendala-moments-5.html" target="_blank">this string</a> and shade it and make it look beautiful that I admit to feeling rather exhausted and a little bored at the end of it all. It took me three days. I lost the sheet of paper on which I had printed out the standard zendala size - and no zendala tile - but I had the XL sheet so that's what I used.<br />
<br />
The tangles I've used are Indyrella, Pokeroot, Pokeleaf, Rixty, Molygon, Tipple and Heartrope. There are some other patterns which are just stripes and squiggles which are probably not tangles. I enjoyed doing the Heartrope and shading it because I don't often achieve that depth.</div>

I tried <a href="http://simtangle.blogspot.com/2019/05/another-new-tangle-sikito-and-some.html" target="_blank">Sikito</a>, the new tangle from SimTangle. As it's a grid tangle, I tried it in various ways and came up with this tile that I liked best. I liked it better sideways so that's how I photographed it. I combined the spaces between Sikito with a variation of <a href="http://tanglepatterns.com/2016/07/how-to-draw-cc.html" target="_blank">CC</a> by Taiwan CZT Mina Hsiao.<br />
<br />
I've recently discovered Sepia Micron and this was drawn with a Sepia 01. Graphite shading made it look dirty but it seemed much better after I used a sepia pastel pencil.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This tile, in fact, was drawn before the previous one. I copied the reticula (grid) from an image on Google Images - look for triangle grids - and filled it up as best as I could with sepia and brown. I might work on the shading again later.</div>

For a while now, quite a few of the challenges I follow have had spring themes, which then naturally include floral motifs. I just finished <a href="http://atanglerinindia.blogspot.com/2019/04/spring-motifs-for-zendala-moments-4.html" target="_blank">one</a> and <a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2019/04/its-string-thing-289.html" target="_blank">this</a>, IAST, is another. Adele, who runs IAST, asked us to use the tangle Rain, along with one or two others that we like. So I used Inapod and Hollibaugh for the stalk, which reminds me rather of a fishnet stocking. But I'm pretty pleased with it overall.<br />
<br />
I kept Rain grey to give it a rainy day look.</div>

<br />
Where I live, in the south of India, there are not very clear distinctions between spring and summer. The temperature goes up, up and up from March and stays that way till October and sometimes even November, after which we are supposed to have rains, and then a very mild winter (we don't even have to wear a sweater) after that, till about mid-January. However, the concept of spring and various spring festivals exist - plants and trees start flowering and some harvest festivals and region-specific New Years commence.<br />
<br />
I love the abstract nature of Zentangle, and the fact that it does not have to represent anything, nor even mean anything. That's one more factor making art approachable to someone like me who is able to appreciate the beauty of abstract art but often fail to understand/imagine how it represents whatever the title of the work says. The concerns for me are then limited to combining tangles well and it looking neat and aesthetic, not having to get the art - a petal or a limb or an expression - right.<br />
<br />
So I don't much bother with representations of anything unless it's a challenge and this time around, it was <a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2019/04/zendala-moments-4.html" target="_blank">Zendala Moments 4</a>. I filled it with the flowery, leafy tangles I could think of, including <a href="http://tangledreams.be/home-2/" target="_blank">Ria's</a> Javik. I now realise that I thoroughly enjoyed doing this tile and later experimenting with the colour schemes in the border.</div>

<br />
This is my entry for <a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2019/03/its-string-thing-284.html" target="_blank">IAST 284</a>. This tile made me feel I was doing tangelations rather than the tangles themselves. Sometimes the simplest of designs seem complicated when I think too much about the "right" way to do them. It's the same when I seem to understand a particularly complex mystery novel being explained at the end - "don't go back, don't analyse it, read it and move on" is what I keep telling myself, knowing fully well that any further thought will make it less clearer to me. I suppose these thoughts are coming from the utterly gripping novel that I finished reading today. I'm not sure if I understood a part of the ending - do you know of any website that demystifies mystery novels' endings?<br />
<br />
This was one event where I felt the tile was one of my improvements. Three years into Zentangle and I still have a long way to go!<br />
<br />

<br />
So there's my Zendala for <a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2019/03/zendala-moments-3.html" target="_blank">Zendala Moments 3</a>. I filled the string with a mixture of Sand Swirl, Marasu, and after some thought, Flux and Tipple. As challenging as I find it to use a string with the tangles specified, which is how some challenges go, I find it as difficult to decide which tangles to use when the strings are given and no tangles are specified. I am wondering if I turn out better designs when it's the latter case. I'm very happy with how this turned out, though I envisioned the Sand Swirl differently.<br />
<br />
What do you prefer? Tangling with string and designs specified, or tangling with just the string, or tangling with no string and no tangles pre-decided?</div>

The last time I did Zentangle on canvas, a few months ago, I didn't know I had to prime the canvas. The person at the art store just handed out a permanent marker and said I could use that and use it I did! Only later did I know that a canvas had to be prepared first! This time, I applied some Gesso to it and left it alone for several days. When I returned to it, I was sure to draw on it with pencil first as I intended to gift it to someone and wanted to do a neat job. I have a long way to go - or a class to take - in priming a canvas, I know.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Some of the design is inspired by a ZIA I saw on Instagram by @doristangles. However, the colours and half of the tangles are my choice. I filled in the dark areas with black permanent marker --- until I realised much, much later that it was brown. As I was putting white on the Marasu, it began to glow purple! I loved the effect! I still don't know if the marker was brown or a blackish purple, but whatever it was, I think it lit up my canvas. Hesitantly, I experimented with the thin lines in the band of Shattuck to the right. Then I tried to balance it on the right and the left and stopped when the left began to look wobbly. I'm happy, but. And I'm thrilled with the marker. I can't remember where I got it from, it says CD/DVD marker so I'm wondering if it's mine at all or belongs to someone else in the house or strayed in somehow. But I'm not going to find out. Finders keepers.</div>

<br /></div>
Once in a while I wonder how I can produce something like this. I'm no artist, just an enthusiast, and many times I end up tearing up my tiles unable to bear how gawky, awkward and ill-combined the tangles look. This wasn't one of them. You can still see the shaky and diffident lines, but this is way above my regular standards. I even thought of covering up some irregular areas with a white Gelly Roll and I love how the shading in the outer half moons (with the Tipple) worked out.<br />
<br />
Mooka is one tangle I do not use often so I decided to get some more practice at it and see how it worked here. I'm glad I did. Printemps - it's almost everyone's first attempt at Zentangle, I'm sure - but here, the size I drew them contributed to them being clumsy. There are quite a few things I wish I could change, but still, I am proud of this.<br />
<br />
I drew this for <a href="https://lonetta13.blogspot.com/2019/02/zendala-moments-2.html" target="_blank">Zendala Moments 2</a>, an event I recently discovered.<br />

<br />
There was a time two years ago when I couldn't stop drawing Gourdgeous. I was taught the tangle in one of the classes I took as a newbie, and found myself doing that a lot in my practice book. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BGtyxlITFnf/?hl=en&taken-by=sra.srav" target="_blank">Here's</a> an early tile, from my Instagram feed.<br />
<br />
As it happens, the gourds wore themselves out, like any good vegetable - I mean that my involvement with them dwindled, to admiring them whenever I came across a tile featuring them. How the stem can be swan neck-like despite the gourd being generously proportioned is still something I have to figure out. If I don't add lines for the ridges from the neck downwards, the pumpkin begins to look more like a sliced onion. I'm glad, though, for the opportunity to draw them, thanks to <a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2018/09/its-string-thing-262.html" target="_blank">IAST 262</a>.<br />
<br />
Wooooooo! was easy to draw - and I promptly left out the third tier of loops in my eagerness to get started. I am now eager to send this off to Adele, so off this goes, third loop-less!<br />

<br />
I love the abstract nature of Zentangle, and the fact that <a href="http://tanglepatterns.com/zentangles/a-pattern-is-not-always-a-tangle" target="_blank">there is no requirement for any piece of this art to represent anything</a>. However, the tangle Swarm immediately conjures up a swarm of locusts or bees. Itching to use this tangle in a Zendala, I imagined sections of Swarm radiating from a centre and set about drawing a string to fill it in.<br />
<br />
I could not draw quite what I wanted but liked what went on to the tile, and the string took on a life of its own. I filled it with Swarms criss-crossing each other, and after a while, thought of Tripoli to fill the rest. The white space in the centre too took on an attractive shape and I left it alone.<br />
<br />
And then came the shading. I've been into Zentangle for just two years and enjoy it immensely but haven't been able to do much dramatic shading, much less work with colour. I have only dabbled with it and it has been a fairly pleasant experience. So this time, I decided to against my grain, throw caution to the wind and shade this Zendala with colour.<br />
<br />
The predictable black turned into the unpredictable: I used Charcoal Gray from my Derwent Inktense set to shade one string of Swarm, and was blown away by the effect. Some time ago, a friend told me to try shading with a Staedtler 8B pencil for a deeper shade, and I used that very frequently till I misplaced the string. The Charcoal Gray is much more striking. I can't wait to use it another time.<br />
<br />
After finishing the browns, I wanted to add more to the tile, but not in the same colour palette. So I chose a green and went about blending it. I hesitated - and went on to add it around the grey Swarm, which accentuated it further. I take few risks, especially when the going is good, but I was glad I went on and on with this tile.<br />
<br />

<br />
This is a portion of the original drawing that I did using <a href="http://tangledreams.be/home-2/" target="_blank">Ria Matheussen's</a> tangles Mazorito, Hexa and Horti, which was <a href="http://tickledtotangle.blogspot.com/2018/08/its-string-thing-256.html" target="_blank">the challenge Adele set</a> for this week in IAST 256. I loved the way Mazorito turned out, but was not happy with the Horti at all. I covered everything except the centre Hexa with black and I liked it for a while. The Hexa began to resemble a rocket, then it turned into a turtle and then it just began to look not so great, to my eyes. So I covered that up too, with black.<br />
<br />
However, I had had to use a mixture of Sakura pens and permanent marker as I did not have a brush pen with me. That resulted in an uneven black surface which showed up on the tile and in the photos, so to take the attention off it, I added the white dots in the centre. I would have left the centre totally black if it had not been full of the impressions of the pen strokes.<br />

<br />
The border tangle was too good to let go, so I began working on another piece, a tan tile this time. I had taken my phone upstairs to charge it, and I was downstairs. I wanted to get on with it so I drew the Hexa from memory, without consulting the step-outs, and got it wrong. But I let it be, and continued with the tile, using Horti as little embellishments around the border rather than as a filler. I kept adding details of white one by one, and the white in the centre was to take the attention of the uneven spaces of the grid. I even thought it was perfect and didn't attempt any shading.<br />
<br />
So this is how I repaired my tiles and felt content with how they had turned out. </div>

<br />
My latest work of Zentangle-inspired art is this turmeric-dyed Zendala tile. The string for it comes from a traditional Indian art varyingly called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangoli" target="_blank">Muggu/ Kolam/ Rangoli</a>, among others. There are differences but there are many similarities as well. The lotus motif (<i>padmam</i>) is a very popular one and the basis of many <i>muggulu</i>, and I used one to make this Zendala.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-jq0m3fdAcY9uFMIOWM7Cq4OZi_y1et9I0AgY5TN1M2sL693KgCdL0UIsmLXTW-t7bVWtFgX4LgwYhD1nBsDyuX4wQ5XZj1lJfdDtn29efewco-20qzRMS5A3k51DM0dLUf9KdjtLe9pu/s1600/IMG_1749.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-jq0m3fdAcY9uFMIOWM7Cq4OZi_y1et9I0AgY5TN1M2sL693KgCdL0UIsmLXTW-t7bVWtFgX4LgwYhD1nBsDyuX4wQ5XZj1lJfdDtn29efewco-20qzRMS5A3k51DM0dLUf9KdjtLe9pu/s320/IMG_1749.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can see the centre motif that we refer to as the lotus in this tradition. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtNt9dtq9qw" target="_blank">Here's a video</a> that shows you how such designs are drawn. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42MJJyb7wv0C6_a_h0AS6kWEYLQlFPTGXDfLZqiG8muy7glTGhw9o25rm5llYJk8tny4s-vz4JUPFUWh-tt_SFcqoSzSEexV-gnuNj39X5tjZaS3Zp57kOZdOGFTJ1oGhRzHQySXYFr0S/s1600/IMG_1750.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42MJJyb7wv0C6_a_h0AS6kWEYLQlFPTGXDfLZqiG8muy7glTGhw9o25rm5llYJk8tny4s-vz4JUPFUWh-tt_SFcqoSzSEexV-gnuNj39X5tjZaS3Zp57kOZdOGFTJ1oGhRzHQySXYFr0S/s640/IMG_1750.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pre-shading, this is how it looked.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My challenge, of course, was to make it look more like a Zentangle tile than a <i>muggu</i>. I spent a fair amount of time looking up tangles and Zendalas on the Internet before tweaking the features of the design to make it a little more original as a string. As the inspiration began with a lotus, I ended the tile by using <a href="http://enthusiasticartist.blogspot.com/2010/11/lotus-pods-tangle-instructions.html" target="_blank">Lotus Pods</a>, by Margaret Bremner, CZT. The other tangles I used and know the names of include Zentangle originals Printemps, Zinger and Nekton. I didn't fill in the spaces between the pods as I wanted the turmeric yellow and other streaks to come through. Some colour from a couple of Derwent Inktense pencils went into the shading.<br />
<br />

I have been learning Zentangle for two years, and of late I have been looking for someone to make small, inexpensive frames, preferably in paper/card stock, to hold my works of art (I use this expression not entirely tongue-in-cheek). I have not yet found the right supplier. A paper frame that I can just slip the tile into, and give out as nifty little gifts that the recipients can exhibit right away is what I have in mind.<br />
<div>
Recently, though, I came up with a great stop-gap arrangement. I was looking for small gifts at a stationery & greeting cards store, when I suddenly thought of empty cards. I bought several of these, put (stuck) a tile in each of them, and gave them out with little gifts. I bought colourful empty cards, and their envelopes made for a bright picture. The friends who got these cards were happy, and so was I, with all the Oohs and the Aahs I received for my work!</div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The photo above is a collection of the tangling I did when I was in a rather stressful environment last month. I won't say it took away the stress but it did give me a measure of calm. The unshaded tile on the right in the centre row was a collaboration with my 10-year-old niece, who rants that I cannot think of anything beyond books and Zentangle as leisure activities, but cannot help drawing herself when she sees me at it. She did most of the Rixty and the Springkle, and some of the Msst. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The white tile at the centre of the bottom row is a technique that I just discovered. It involves dipping a string in water colours, placing it on the tile, weighting it down with a heavy object, and pulling the string from underneath so that it makes a splotch - it could be more aesthetic than that with practice - and tangling on it. There are many videos on YouTube demonstrating this technique. I'm rather happy that my drawing turned out the way it did - abstract, yet giving a sense of plenty, like a cornucopia.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I used poster colours to paint the blue tile on the top left, which was the wrong choice of paint. My pens performed with difficulty on it and that is a tile I'll be returning to some time later.</div>
